BecAUSe We Care: StFX Athletics salutes Canada’s Armed Forces

(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - This past Saturday, the X-Men hockey team hosted its inaugural Military Appreciation Game in honour of upcoming Rembrance Day.

The X-Men were greeted by a large, energetic crowd as they donned special camouflage jerseys in honor of the Canadian Armed Forces. Free admission was given to all veterans and active duty military personnel. Representatives of the Canadian Army, Air Force, and the Royal Canadian Navy were all present for this special occasion.

Before the ceremonial puck drop by Major Todd of the Nova Scotia Highlanders, fans had a chance to take a tour upon the Navy’s mobile command display bus. StFX fans were captivated by a special national anthem performance and intermission show by the Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy.

The game was a hard-fought battle by both the X-Men and the Saint Mary’s Huskies, who eventually took the lead and held it for the remainder of the game, winning 4-1. Poppies filled the crowd and donations were collected for the local Antigonish Legion. The feedback from the military presence and local families in attendance was appreciative.

“Events like this really hit home for Canadians who have served and for families that have lost loved ones over the year,” commented Major Todd, also a StFX alumnus. “This is a great way to honour them and reinforce the message of Remembrance Day.”

StFX Athletics and the Canadian Armed Forces have already begun talks on planning to host this event again next November. Both parties wish all the best to our Canadian troops abroad and their families over the upcoming Remembrance Day weekend.
