StFX's Roper and UNB's Maillet named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Kolbi Roper of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women's basketball team and Philippe Maillet of the UNB Varsity Reds men's hockey team have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for the period ending Jan. 26, 2014.

Kolbi Roper of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women’s basketball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 26, 2014.

A third-year arts student from North Vancouver, B.C., Roper played a key role in two StFX weekend wins over the Memorial University Sea-Hawks.

In Saturday’s 78-64 victory, she scored 11 points and added six rebounds and two blocks. She was then named Subway Player of the Game in Sunday’s 71-65 victory after posting a game-high 22 points, along with six rebounds and one assist.

Philippe Maillet of the CIS No. 3-ranked UNB Varsity Reds men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 26, 2014.

A first-year student hailing from Terrabone, Que., the AUS leading rookie scorer had a six point weekend in two wins versus the St. Thomas Tommies and the UPEI Panthers.

In Friday’s 6-4 victory over the Tommies, Maillet put the Varsity Reds on the board to jump start their eventual comeback from a 3-0 deficit. He went on to add three more assists for a four-point night and Subway Player of the Game honours.

Maillet then put UNB on the board Saturday night, scoring a shorthanded goal in the first to tie the game at 1-1. He went on to score a second goal near the end of the second period to again tie the game at 3-3 in an eventual 5-4 overtime win for the Varsity Reds.

He was again named Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.
